A Day in the Life of a Specialist Technician, featuring Georgina Slack at JCT600 Brooklands Ferrari / Maserati
What does a typical working day look life for you?
A typical day in the workshop is never the same for a technician. You never know what task you are faced with each day. It could either be something routine like a service or changing brake pads, or something more in depth like a electrical problem or an engine strip down. Usually the working week will start with a team meeting, which involves the our service manager and workshop controller informing us about the work booked in during the week, and also any news about the company that we need to know about.
What challenges have you faced being a woman in a typically male dominated role and how have you overcome them?
One of the main challenges I faced was the changing and washing facilities for women in the workshop. This has recently been addressed by my company in the plans for our new dealership which is being built in the coming weeks. The new building will include a wash and change facility for ladies in the workshop.
It was also very daunting being the only female technician in the workshop. But the team were very welcoming and even now they still push me to become a stronger person!
You recently won the Inspiring Automotive Women Trailblazer Award. How has this recognition supported you both personally and professionally ?
The recognition for the trailblazer award personally has been a massive confidence boost for me. It was something I never expected to be nominated for never mind actually winning.
Professionally I will use my recognition to encourage more women into the motor trade by attending career days at schools and colleges. My award will help show that women in the automotive sector can be successful and show the trade is exciting and full of possibilities.
What’s the next step for you professionally and where do you see yourself in 10 years time?
In the next 10 years I would love to see myself as a master technician for Ferrari. Also I would like to take on the responsibility as a mentor for a apprentice.
More importantly in 10 years time I would like to be working along side more female technicians.
