Meet Rachel Shepherd, General Manager, HR & Facilities, Toyota GB & IAW Award Winner for 2019

Rachel has worked in the automotive sector for 20 years. Her previous roles have all been in HR including roles in training & development, as a Senior HR Consultant and in Organisation Development.

Rachel ensures that Toyota creates the right framework for the best employee experience and inclusive working environment that enables every individual to be their best, to keep improving it by listening to employees and ensuring that they support managers to deliver it.

Upon asking Rachel what she does to achieve a better gender balance in the industry, she comments: “It starts with ensuring we are an attractive place to work for all through our work on creating the best employee experience. We have placed a lot of emphasis on developing our managers to be coaches and have open conversations with their teams about how they can enable them to be their best and deliver their best work. Our Management Deal is at the heart of this, clarity between manager and employee of their working relationship including regular 1 to 1’s .

Rachel continues “Our sponsorship activities are focused on recognising and supporting women in the motor trade whether that be by sponsoring awards or the Inspiring e zine, bringing women together to create a super network.”

It was the brand and the variety that inspired Rachel to join the Automotive sector. She feels very fortunate to work for some great managers who have encouraged and empowered her to develop her ideas and have trusted her to deliver.

On hearing the news of her award win, Rachel commented: “I was genuinely surprised and very touched that I had received the nomination as I work with some amazing women who are all inspiring.”
