My Apprenticeship Story by Aimen Khalid
Constantly learning, and loving the job where every day is different
I knew the apprenticeship route was the best for me straight from school. I was always really interested in joining the motor trade, so I felt as though a 2 year apprenticeship was a good route for me to pursue. Here is #MyApprenticeshipStory…
I love that everyday differs in the automotive industry, and I find the training I receive in the workplace really interesting and informative. My apprenticeship also gave me the opportunity to undergo a 2 year training programme with Volkswagen, as a Parts Apprentice, which I studied as week long periods. This block release allowed me to focus solely on work whilst I was in the work environment, and then I was able to focus on my apprenticeship studies whilst at Volkswagen.
Most days differ slightly, but we start with the workshop meeting (discussing which job the technicians are on with and letting them know what to expect during the day), we see customers in (greet and discuss the work being carried out), call customers keeping them updated on any further work, health check etc. We have to invoice jobs on a daily basis and see the vehicle out.
I love being able to constantly learn new things as an apprentice, I’m able to learn about a subject that I once enjoyed as a hobby, it’s a bonus that I get paid for doing it at the same time!
I would advise anyone if they are interested in an apprenticeship to gain some work experience first, if possible. This will help you get to know more about the industry you are interested in, and to see what role might interest you. I would recommend work experience to anyone who wants to get straight into working, as it gives you some deeper insight of the working world.
